Fairphone 2 Launched ‘World’s First Modular Smartphone’

The present Smartphone market is very competitive and all the Smartphone makers come up with varied types of specs and new features ever time to woo the customers but in all these chaos a Dutch has managed to stand-out, first with the first ‘ethically sourced smartphone’ in 2013 when the company was founded and now once again with the Fairphone 2, the first modular smartphone.

Thanks to the modular nature of the phone the user can disassemble the phone easily by removing the back panel and then removing the different layers. This allows for a deeper relationship between the user and his smartphone and he can even repair the parts himself. In a press release by Fairphone, they said that the Fairphone 2 will encourage the users to have a deeper relationship with their smartphones and this will also make them more capable to take care of their device and keep it in working condition.

It is understandable if the Fairphone 2 makes you think about Google’s project ARA. However they announced in August that the launch of the much anticipated Project Ara modular smartphones has been delayed until 2016.

Like its first phone, the company has made the Fairphone 2 with ethically sourced materials. They sourced the tin and tantalum from the Democratic Republic of the Congo where it is conflict free. The company has set up an e-waste recycling plant in Ghana.World's-First-Modular-SmartphoneIn the department of specs and features the Fairphone 2 sports a 5-inch Full HD LCD display on the front that has a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and a pixel density of 446 ppi and it is protected by Gorilla Glass 3.

The Fairphone 2 is powered by a 2.26 GHz, quad-core, Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, which is supported by an Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB RAM. The device has 32GB of internal memory to offer and that can be further expanded using a microSD card.

In the camera department the Fairphone 2 has an 8 MP camera on the back and an 2 MP camera on the front. Both having CMOS sensor.

The Fairphone 2 runs the Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box and is fuelled by a 2,420 mAh lithium-ion removable battery. Other features include dual-SIM capability, 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 and GPS connectivity.

You can choose from three different color variants: – Blue Translucent,  Blue Matte, Black Translucent, Transparent and Black Matte.

The sad part is if you are not in Europe, you will have to wait to get your hands on the Fairphone 2 as the phone is available for pre-order only in selected European countries. The Fairphone 2 will cost €529.38 (about $585 or 38000 INR approx). The phone will start shipping by December.
